Other Cultures&Groups: Why do people care about what black women do with their hair?
like when a black girl wears weave or perms her hair its a problem but white women like Britney Spears wears weave all the time and its ok. People say black women try to be white when they straighten their hair but Christina Aguilera rocks an afro and people thinks its cool. I’m not just tryin to pick on white women I’m just using them as examples cuz people always saying black girls try to wear their hair like white girls. And even if this is true why do people care so much?
Its not really what Blacks do with their hair…its how we see our hair.
Black people are the only race which uses the term “good hair” and “bad hair”. That alone speaks volumes about our own beliefs about who we are and where we come from. As you said, white people get weaves, extensions, etc….but they don’t necessarily look at their own hair as “bad”. A White person with curly hair won’t be likely to get made fun of or ridiculed, and a White person with pale skin doesn’t get called hurtful names or forced to feel shame for who they are. But darkskinned Black people are almost NEVER shown as beautiful, and when they are you hear things like “you’re pretty for a dark girl” etc. Blacks with coarse hair are literally treated like crap by OTHER BLACK PEOPLE…why do you think the first female Black millionaire just happened to be the same woman who taught yall how to straighten your hair?
I don’t care about whether or not you perm…I really don’t. But its the disparaging self image which bothers me.
